Cranston wasn’t always known by this name. At one time it was called Pawtuxet. This is because it emerged from a part of Providence north of the Pawtuxet River. But thereafter it lost a great deal of its territory to neighboring towns as well as Providence City so in 1910, Cranston emerged. About four years ago it was named one of the “100 Best Places to Live” and is ranked among America’s 25 safest cities in the country.
