South Carolina borders North Carolina (north) and Gerogia (south). It gained its name in honor of King Charles I, since Carolus in Latin for Charles. It was the founding state of the Confederate States of America. The population of South Carolina was estimated at 4,561, 242 in 2009 (comprising 46 counties).
